Trailblazing change: How Whittlesea locals are leading their communities, one step at a time

In a world where real change often starts at the grassroots, Whittlesea is investing in its most powerful resource– its people.

Through its free Community Leadership Program, the council is helping residents transform passion into purpose, equipping everyday individuals with the tools to drive change, build stronger neighbourhoods and foster belonging across the city.

Expressions of interest are now open for Whittlesea’s 2025 Community Leadership Program– a no-cost opportunity for locals to grow their skills, confidence and networks as they learn to lead community projects and make a lasting impact.

The program offers a series of free workshops and hands-on training sessions designed to help participants build leadership skills, improve teamwork and strengthen their ability to create meaningful change.

It’s open to anyone eager to start a community initiative, step into a leadership role or simply better understand how local governments work.

For Wollert resident Najam UsSaqib, the program sparked a movement.

Alongside his friend Hassan, Najam founded ‘The Hiking Tribe’– a welcoming group that connects people through nature, bringing together migrants and locals alike for hikes, bike rides and outdoor adventures.

“The program helped me learn how to lead a volunteer group, create a welcoming community and handle challenges,” Mr UsSaqib said.

“It teaches leadership, teamwork and problem-solving, but most of all, it helps you grow as a person.”

Acting Mayor Daniela Zinni, a past participant herself, said the program’s impact speaks for itself.

“This program empowers people to make a real difference– whether by starting new initiatives, leading local groups or advocating for important causes,” Cr Zinni said.

“If you’re looking to give back and grow your leadership skills, I encourage you to apply.”

Expressions of interest close May 12.

People of all ages and backgrounds– including First Nations people, migrants, young people. Women, gender-diverse individuals and people with disability– are encouraged to step forward and lead the change they want to see.
