Now is the time to prepare your house and properties ahead of the upcoming Fire Danger Period.
Hume council is reminding residents that they need to act now ahead of the fire season. There’s a history of grass fires in Hume in recent years.
Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola said with the Fire Danger Period approaching, it is important for residents to be aware and understand the fire risks in their area.
“Fire is a major risk in our community and Hume City has a long history of fast-moving grass fires, especially during the declared Fire Danger Period,” Mr Isola said.
“All Hume residents need to take responsibility for removing fire hazards and rubbish on their land, and council offers a number of waste services to support residents to do this.
“Council officers are commencing annual fire hazard property inspections. These inspections are important in helping us as a community reduce fire risk.”
As well as preparing their properties for the fire season, Mr Isola is encouraging residents to download the VicEmergency app and start to check Fire Danger Ratings daily.
“Regardless of whether people live on the urban fringe or in a rural setting, it is vital to have a fire ready plan in place and be prepared,” he said.
“By making sure you and your family know and understand the warning levels and what they mean, will help you to implement your fire plan in the event of an emergency.”
The council has installed new signs across the municipality as an additional reminder for residents to prepare properties before the Fire Danger Period commences.
They are also working with state government and fire service agencies to ensure that the city is fire ready.
