A series of reckless driving events took place in Melbourne’s north over the Easter long weekend.
A 32-year-old man was clocked by police driving at an alleged speed of 144km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Tullamarine Freeway on Friday, April 15 at 8.30pm, police said.
The vehicle was impounded and issued with a defect notice due to alleged high modifications. Police say the man will be charged for the speeding offence.
An hour later, police witnessed a black Holden traveling down the wrong lane along Barry Road in Upfield, with the headlights switched off at an approximate speed of 130km/h.
A 23-year-old man was arrested and the car was impounded after an air wing observed the vehicle traveling more than 140km/h in a 60km/h zone on Pascoe Vale Road.
He was charged with reckless conduct endangering life and serious injury and was bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court at a later date.
A few hours later, a white Hyundai iLoad van was seen by police traveling at high speeds on Edgars Road, Thomastown, about 1.30am.
The driver continued on the M80 Ring Road.
The van allegedly hit 182km/h in a 100km/h zone on the ring road, before exiting at Dalton Road in the wrong lane and continuing in that lane around the Lalor area, police said.
The van then allegedly travelled back onto the ring road, continuing onto the Hume Freeway at a speed of 155km/h, exiting at O’Hearns Road before getting back on the freeway on the wrong side of the road, according to police.
The driver then allegedly exited onto Craigieburn Road before driving down a bike path and abandoning the van near the Merri Creek overpass.
The driver fled on foot and was arrested by police in swamp land nearby.
The Hyundai iLoad van was impounded by police and a 33-year-old man was charged with conduct endangering life.
He was bailed to appear at court at a later date.
