Houses in Epping, Mill Park, Broadmeadows, Kalkallo and surrounds are without power this afternoon as part of rolling outages ordered by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
The AEMO has instructed 200 megawatts to be shed across Melbourne as the state grapples with record-breaking temperatures, high demand for electricity and reduced generation availability.
About 60,000 customers are expected to be affected by this afternoon’s outages.
In a statement, the AEMO said the outages were required to maintain electricity supply and protect the power system.
“At this stage, we are expecting more favourable weather and supply-demand conditions mid-afternoon, reducing the need for scheduled supply interruptions into the evening, barring further major generation issues,” the statement read.

The Australian Energy Market Operator issued a notification for our electricity transmission business to ask Victorian electricity distributors to implement their load shedding plans across the network. We may have to limit supply to some areas for up to two hours
