As president of the Whittlesea Business Group, Workin’ Clobber owner Terry Hutton is passionate about encouraging people to shop local.
What suburb do you live in, and how long have you lived there?
I’ve lived in Humevale for four and a half years. We moved to the area in search of more land for horses.
What do you love about your community?
It’s a really good mix of traditional Australian country-style values; that’s a really big part for me. It has a really interesting mix of community groups.
There aren’t many communities with an agricultural society, country music festival and all the sporting clubs. There’s a lot on offer for people moving to the area.
What, if anything, would you like to change?
From a trader’s perspective, I would like to grow loyalty to local traders.
How did you become involved with the Whittlesea Business Group?
It started when I opened our Whittlesea shop two years ago. I had experience in the Hurstbridge traders and there was a real opportunity to work together as a team to develop an approach to marketing.
What’s planned for the Christmas on Church event?
It’s on December 14, from 4-8pm. It’s a celebration for the community with a lot of fun things happening, like the dunking machine to raise money for community groups, raffles, children’s activities and stalls promoting various groups.
Why should people shop local?
I don’t know why more people don’t shop local. I think there’s a great range of products on offer. I’ve lived in the country for decades and I think the offering in Whittlesea is very special.
There’s a lot of offerings that other country towns don’t have.
