Temporary lights ‘not feasible’

Donnybrae estate residents are calling for temporary traffic lights at the intersection of Willaroy Boulevard and Donnybrook Road to improve safety for drivers entering the busy thoroughfare.

The petition is being backed by Liberal MP for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell and has highlighted the difficulties residents of a fast-growing area have faced when turning right towards the Hume Freeway, as well as the impacts of peak morning traffic on the road.

Ms Lovell raised the issue in parliament on Tuesday, August 26, backing the community’s call for immediate action and calling on the state government to consider a temporary solution.

“I strongly support the call for Donnybrae residents for temporary traffic lights to help them safely exit the estate,” she said.

“This is a practical measure while long-term infrastructure upgrades are planned.”

Community advocates have said road upgrades have not kept pace with the population growth in the area, placing pressure on already existing infrastructure.

“During peak hours, Donnybrook Road is highly congested, making it extremely difficult and dangerous for vehicles to safely turn onto the road – especially when turning right. Many drivers are forced to take risks, which has already led to multiple accidents and near misses,” the petition states online.

Whittlesea mayor Martin Taylor said council is working with developers to make the intersection safer.

“There are plans for signalised intersections adjoining the Donnybrae estate and council is working with developers to bring forward the construction of these as soon as possible.” he said.

However the Department of Dransport has advised council temporary traffic lights won’t work.

“DTP have advised that temporary signals at that location are not feasible,” Cr taylor said.

“Council will continue to advocate to the Victorian Government for a full upgrade of Donnybrook Road.”

The roads minister was contacted for comment.
