Synthetic pitch to boost soccer participation

Whittlesea has taken a major step in supporting grassroots soccer with the completion of a new FIFA-accredited synthetic pitch at Partridge Recreation Reserve in Lalor.

The $2.6 million project, fully funded by the local council, has transformed a natural grass pitch into a state-of-the-art synthetic surface, featuring improved drainage, fencing, and cutting-edge LED sports lighting.

The shift to an all-weather synthetic pitch has already proven to be a game-changer, increasing usage from just 20 hours a week to over 40 hours, while significantly reducing cancellations due to weather.

The upgrade supports the council’s goal to increase participation in organized sports, particularly for women and girls, by providing modern, purpose-built facilities.

The new pitch benefits tenant Mill Park Soccer Club and other local organisations, offering more opportunities for player development and new pathways for athletes.

The project also stands out for its focus on sustainability, incorporating repurposed olive pith – a waste by-product from the olive oil industry – as organic infill. Additionally, about 145 tonnes of plastic and rubber waste were diverted from landfills and used to create the pitch’s underlay.

Mayor Martin Taylor emphasised the positive impact on community health.

“This project will benefit the community for many years to com,” he said.
