New research by sports retailer rebel sport has revealed that 16 per cent of Australians are exercising just once a week and sometimes less.
This is despite the recommended amount of moderate physical exercise a week being two to five hours for adults, according to the Department of Health.
‘rebel’s Largest Sporting Survey’ asked more than 10,000 ‘rebel Active members’ to find out about how they participate and follow their favourite sport and exercise activities.
It found two in three participants use exercise to relieve symptoms of stress and support their mental health.
Other reasons included for fun at 59 per cent, socialising at 41 per cent and enhancing physical appearance at 44 per cent of respondents.
The results showed a quarter of Australians exercise either before 6:00am or after 8:00pm.
rebel general manager of marketing Rosemary Martin said she was hopeful that the results would serve as a call to action for more people to utilise sport and exercise to benefit their own lives.
“We’re a sporting nation, and seeing our athletes achieve their dreams in the coming weeks will inspire generations of young Aussies on their sporting dreams,” she said.
“We’re encouraging Aussies of all ages to use that same inspiration to transform the ordinary into something spectacular – getting fit and healthy, both physically and mentally.”
