A new website is helping put a spotlight on unique art, music, dance and other creative forms created in Whittlesea.

The Whittlesea Arts website, set up by Whittlesea council, aims to support local artists by providing a platform for residents to participate in creative online programs to stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Dark Talk Time by local artist Ben Landau is currently featured on the website. Landau received a council grant from the COVID-19 Creative Communities Fund.

His project connects strangers to participate in honest and rejuvenating phone conversations.

“Now more than ever, local artists like me need new pathways to connect with the local community,” he said.

“It’s very reassuring that in this time of isolation, we can deliver programs that bring people together and open up a whole new world through art.”

Whittlesea administrator Peita Duncan said Whittlesea Arts was an exciting new platform that celebrates unity and diversity.

“The arts have a unique way of bringing people together,” Ms Duncan said.

“Although we may be physically apart, this new online platform encourages engagement with people in our community by creating opportunities for cultural expression.

“The cultural dance workshops are a fantastic way for people at home to learn more about Aboriginal culture and dance moves that originated from around the world.”
