Students urged to walk to school

Lace up your sneakers, grab your friends and get out there – that’s the message to Hume and Macedon Ranges children ahead of Walk to School month.

Hume mayor Adem Atmaca is encouraging youngsters to use the October event to start healthy habits.

‘‘Walking is a great way to improve your fitness, and it gives you a sense of achievement at the start of the day,’’ he says. ‘‘Children can also cultivate wonderful friendships when they stroll to school with their classmates.’’

Kids can keep track of their walks via classroom calendars or the Walk to School website or app. Macedon Ranges council is offering $300 to schools wanting to host healthy breakfasts, and there are prizes for the school with the most walkers.
