Students’ art to light up Broadmeadows

Art works created by Hume Central Secondary College students will be projected onto Broadmeadows Town Hall in August as part of the Broadmeadows Festival.

Students have spent six weeks working on the creations, including moving art, 3D renderings and collages, under the guidance of artist Yandell Watson as part of the school’s Light Project.

Watson said her six-week program for the students was inspired by the aesthetic, motifs and themes of surrealist art.

“I wanted students to connect to themselves,” she said.

“Each week they would look at a theme, and create something meaningful to them, as either an individual or in a group.”

Art teacher Anthony Bottino initiated the program, which was in the works from 2019 and put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Bottino said the project was a chance to have “everyone involved and all included”.

“It’s a chance to take education outside [the school] walls,” he said.

“There’s a lifelong learning focus and it’s something for students to be proud of.

“These kids are elite in art, they just don’t know it yet.”

The school held a celebration lunch last week to acknowledge Watson.

The partnership between Hume Central Secondary College and Watson is part of Creative Victoria’s artists-in-schools program.

The program allows career creatives to work with schools to support a creative project.
