Charities working in Whittlesea have had a helping hand from year 12 students at St Monica’s College.

The Epping school hosted 10 charities, including Foodbank, Red Cross and Caritas last Friday, as part of its annual Formation Day.

The students met with representatives from the charities to better understand the day-to-day work they do, before rolling up their own sleeves to help pack hospital and food parcels, and sew trauma teddies.

Principal Brian Hanley said the day taught students about practising social justice.

“The college has a very strong social justice program and this event will help students understand the needs of charities operating in their own communities,” he said.

“By involving them in hands-on activities with the charities, it will bring home to them the needs of the people each charity assists.”
