A primary school is a step closer to being built in Mickleham’s Merrifield estate, with the state government acquiring land for the school.
Merrifield West Primary School will be built on Blackmore Road and is expected to open in 2021.
The Merrifield West Northern Community Hub will be built next door to the school and will provide three and four-year-old kindergarten, as well as maternal and child health services.
The hub is also expected to open in 2021.
Yuroke MP Ros Spence said building the school next door to a kindergarten would help end the “dreaded double drop-off” for parents.
“Making Victoria the education state starts with the early years – that’s why every new primary school being built from 2021 will feature a kindergarten on-site or next door, to ensure children can get continuity of education,” she said.
“This means children living in and near Merrifield will not only get the best start to life at kinder, they’ll also get the most out of their primary education at a great new local school.”
Merrifield West Primary School is one of five new schools opening in Hume by 2022.
Elevation Secondary College in Craigieburn will open next year, followed by Greenvale North West Primary School in 2021, and Kalkallo Common Primary School and Greenvale Secondary College in 2022.
