A parcel of land in Mernda will be compulsorily acquired by the state government for the new City of Whittlesea Community Hospital.

A community update circulated by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) said the commercially-owned land at 1410 Plenty Road has been identified as the preferred site for the hospital.

In 2018, the state government pledged to spend $675 million to build 10 community hospitals, including in the City of Whittlesea.

Another community hospital will be built in Craigieburn.

According to the VHBA, construction of the City of Whittlesea Community Hospital is expected to begin in 2022 and will be completed in 2024, however the exact timing of construction is yet to be determined.

The hospital will be managed by Northern Health.

The authority said an architect will be appointed shortly to design the hospital, which is likely to be two to three storeys tall.

“The new City of Whittlesea Community Hospital will be a small public hospital that will help take pressure off nearby major hospitals… and enable more people to manage their health needs closer to home,” the VHBA said,

“The VHBA worked with Northern Health and key stakeholders to identify potential land before settling on 1410 Plenty Road as the preferred location.”
