The Greenbrook Singers have made the most of their time during COVID-19, releasing a music video.
The group of 10 singers, who have been together for more than 15 years, were forced to find new ways of performing and rehearsing during lockdown, taking their music online.
Group leader Margaret Crichton said all but one of their members were able to be involved online.
“We had to learn how to use Zoom,” she said.
“It’s a challenge for music, as you can’t have everyone unmuted, as it isn’t all in sync. We had some technical challenges.”
The choir usually rehearses at Greenbrook Community House. The house’s community development officer, Liz Skitch, the choir make a music video during the lockdowns,
Ms Crichton said the choir found the perfect song – Pass Over was written by Philadelphia singer Avi Wisni. The song is about resilience, positivity and a celebration of the simple joy of singing together.
“I came across this singer-writer on Facebook and for some reason, I didn’t scroll past.
“I listened and it was so amazing that we had to sing that song. I contacted her and she gave permission for me to teach it.
“She wrote it a couple of years ago, but it fits so well for now.”
The choir enlisted artists from Mernda and Greenbrook community houses to provide artwork for the clip.
Community Music Victoria helped put the clip together.
“It comes together so well,” Ms Crichton said.
“It’s not as polished as a MSO [Melbourne Symphony Orchestra] performance, but it’s a great representation of us.”
The group has started to practice face-to-face again and is hoping to start performing in person next year.
But before then, they’ve found a way to keep busy.
“We’re working on another video to release it before Christmas”
