Shootings prompt police raids

Seven men from around Hume have been charged over a series of non-fatal shootings in Melbourne’s north earlier this month.

Embona Taskforce detectives, who investigate robberies in the Fawkner area, executed search warrants at 10 properties in Dallas, Fawkner, Coolaroo, Meadow Heights, Broadmeadows, Craigieburn and Thomastown on Wednesday.

The warrants were carried out in relation to an investigation into five shootings in Broadmeadows, Dallas and Thomastown over three days beginning on March 4.

Six people were arrested, including:

  • A Glenroy man, 34, who has been charged with theft from a motor vehicle and handling stolen goods. He has been bailed to appear at court on April 7.
  • A Broadmeadows man, 19, has been charged with failing to comply with magistrates’ directions and has been bailed to appear at court on June 25.
  • A Broadmeadows man, 21, has been charged with handling stolen goods and possessing proceeds of crime. He has been bailed to appear at court on the May 3.
  • A Craigieburn man, 23, has been charged with drug possession and has been bailed to appear at court on the 15 June.
  • An 18-year-old Craigieburn man has been charged with possessing prohibited weapons and has been bailed to appear at court on the May 3.
  • A Dallas man, 24, was also arrested this morning and charged in relation to a firearms related burglary, theft, and driving matters. He has been bailed to appear at court on March 29.

Guns, drugs, stolen cars, number plates, iPads, mobile phones and prohibited weapons were seized at the properties.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said the investigation into the shootings between March 4 and March 6 is ongoing.

“We will continue to make significant seizures of firearms and we continue to target those crime groups and those individuals who use firearms in society,” he said.
