SES members take on other emergency services

More than 3000 police and emergency services personnel, firefighters, paramedics, lifesavers, and corrections and customs officers are lining up to compete in this year’s Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games.

South Morang SES volunteers Anders Bengtsson (pictured) and his son, Matt, will take on the mountain bike challenge at Torquay.

The gruelling event involves racing around a four-kilometre track for three hours.

“You have to be a little bit fit for it, but it’s as competitive as you want to make it,”Bengtsson said.

“I’m very competitive and I ride all the time, but my son isn’t,” he added with a laugh.

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett says this year’s games, the 34th, are set to be one of the biggest.

Emergency services staff from across the state will compete in more than 42 sports between April 8 and 17.
