Thomastown Tennis Club will open its courts to the public this weekend as part of a ‘welcome day’.
The club, which changed its names from St Luke’s Thomastown Tennis Club last year to align with its “diverse multicultural membership”, is hoping the day will encourage more people to give tennis a go.
President Paul Bezzina said the club had seen a rise in interest in the sport following the Australian Open.
He said Australian Open women’s champion Ash Barty was “a great role model” who would hopefully inspire more girls to pick up a racquet.
Coaching academy Top Tennis ran a girl’s program during the school holidays which Mr Bezzina said was very successful.
The welcome day will be held on Sunday, February 13, 10.30am-1pm at Thomastown East Reserve, Rowen Street, Thomastown.
Activities on the day will include free coaching sessions and social play. There will also be a free barbecue, giveaways and membership specials.
