Bundoora radio station 3KND had no hesitation in getting involved in this year’s re-imagined Victorian Seniors Festival.

With no actual events allowed to occur due to COVID-19, the festival has gone digital, partnering with local radio stations who will run weekly shows for two months.

3KND, Melbourne’s only Indigenous radio station, has been featuring festival stories and voices from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Elders, as well as entertaining music that takes people back to when they were young.

Station manager Gerry Lyons said the radio station was proud to be part of the initiative and everyone at the station was excited to be involved.

“There’s lots of old time music and stories from young and older people,” Mr Lyons said.

“The young ones growing up, have had Elders around and telling stories and these stories are told so much.

“The stories are as relevant today as they were back then.”

Mr Lyons said the feedback so far had been really good, with listeners ringing up the radio station saying they love listening to the seniors festival shows.

“It runs every Thursday and it’s a really good time, with people starting to get ready for the weekend.

“It has gone down really with the older generation. The value of seniors can not be underestimated.”

The Seniors Festival show on 3KND is on Thursdays at 7pm until October 29.
