A year 9 student from Marymede Catholic College has stepped up to help save a life.

Veronica, 14, was on a family trip to Paddy’s River Falls in Tumbarumba, New South Wales over the Queen’s Birthday weekend when a fellow visitor to the falls collapsed.

Veronica said the man’s wife called out for help and asked for someone to perform CPR.

“None of the adults there knew how to do CPR, so I stepped up,” she said.

“I wasn’t really nervous as the adrenaline was rushing through me.”

Veronica said she performed CPR for about 15 minutes before an ambulance arrived to take the man to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

She said she had the confidence to help the man after learning CPR while in grade six at Marymede, even though this was the first time she had put her training to use.

Marymede Catholic College’s Carolyn Key said the school was very proud of Veronica.

“We are very proud Veronica had confidence in herself and presented herself to help.”
