Ronald Briggs is driven by a passion to help Aboriginal men live happy, fulfilling lives.
For years, Mr Briggs has worked with men of his community on health and helping them connect better with their families and children. He wants more Aboriginal men to be hands-on in raising their children, but knows this will require cultural change.
To help, Mr Briggs runs a parenting program for Aboriginal dads with Mercy Hospital, as well as a fortnightly support group, where fathers can discuss the challenges they face as parents.
Through his work as a senior cultural advisor at the Children’s Protection Society, Mr Briggs also provides Aboriginal dads with counselling.
His dedication to ensuring more children spend time with their fathers has led to Mr Briggs being nominated for a HESTA community sector unsung hero award.
He is one of four finalists, with the winner due to be announced on November 17.
Mr Briggs said he wants to ensure more Aboriginal children have good male role models by encouraging men to support their partners and look after their own health.
“A lot of my friends have passed on and they shouldn’t have,” he said. “I want to help men live a long life if they can, and make sure men are staying on the right track.”
