A Bundoora hospital has become the first Healthscope facility to acquire a robotic assistant, allowing surgeons to tailor knee replacements to each patient’s unique anatomical requirements.
Northpark Private Hospital has obtained the Robotic Orthopaedic Surgical Assistant (ROSA), which collects individual patient data before and during surgery to assist surgeons in personalising knee replacements.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr David Love said the ROSA offered several advantages for surgeons and patients.
“It can improve the accuracy of implantation during surgery which allows for better functional outcomes in patients,” Dr Love said.
“My colleagues and I are excited to be trained on this world-class equipment in coming weeks and look forward to incorporating it into procedures.”
Northpark Private general manager Charmayne Thompson said the hospital’s goal was to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients, including optimal recovery from surgery, and increased patient satisfaction.
“The ROSA acquisition further highlights our commitment to support our world-class surgeons with leading edge technology to improve patient outcomes,” Ms Thompson said.
The ROSA Knee System supports surgeons in performing Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) with features to assist with the bone resections, as well as assessing the state of the soft tissues to facilitate implant positioning intraoperatively.
It also supports clinical efficiency through imaging options and reduced instrumentation.
Up to eight surgeons will be trained to use the device for knee arthroplasty operations in coming weeks, with the first patients expected to be treated in early 2022.
