Road to nowhere

Several of Hume and Whittlesea’s intersections have been named among Melbourne’s most dangerous, frustrating and unfit in RACV’s My Melbourne Road Campaign, which surveyed more than 12,000 road users across the region.

The annual campaign evaluated 364 metropolitan intersections based on crash data, traffic volumes, and design complexity, of which 84 were shortlisted as Melbourne’s worst.

Local motorists identified the roundabout at Dalton and Settlement roads as well as the High Street and Settlement Road intersection in Thomastown as major problem areas.

Over in Epping, the High Street and Rufus Street roundabout was also flagged a danger zone.

Many around the problem areas have complained of risks associated with congestion, confusing lane markings and aggressive driver behaviour during peak hours.

Many residents have called for better signage and clearer right-of-way markings to prevent near-misses and rear-end collisions.

Further West, Hume’s Sydney Road and Somerton Road intersection in Somerton, Camp Street and Blair Street intersection in Broadmeadows and Coolaroo’s Pascoe Vale Road and Opera Boulevard intersection were all flagged for heavy congestion, poor visibility and unsafe turning conditions.

RACV head of policy James Williams said addressing high-risk intersections would not only reduce crash risks but also ease daily frustration for thousands of commuters.

“Improving these intersections is essential if we’re serious about halving road deaths by 2030,” Mr Williams said.

“While improved driver behaviour and vehicle safety technologies are crucial, we will not reach our Towards Zero targets without investing in safer roads.”
