Hume residents making a difference in the community will be recognised as part of council’s new community awards program.

Council said the 2023 I Love Hume – Hume Community Awards will be a chance for locals to show what they value when it comes to community pride and spirit, backed by a number of new award categories that better represent residents.

To ensure the event is a true celebration of the unique achievements of residents, the Hume Community Awards will become the primary annual ceremony for community recognition, replacing the Australia Day Awards on January 26.

Nominations are now open across eight categories, including academic excellence, advocacy and social justice, community service excellence, environmental stewardship, outstanding cultural leadership, outstanding community leadership, and sports and recreation achievement.

Mayor Joseph Haweil encouraged people to nominate the “quiet achievers, hard workers and community leaders” in their lives.

“The chance to celebrate our friends and neighbours, and the incredible efforts they put into bettering themselves and our community, brings us together in so many ways,” he said.

“Not only do these awards increase the pride we feel in the people and places around us, it encourages others to want to stand up and contribute also.”

Applications are open until Sunday, September 17.
