Residents urged to prepare this bushfire season

Yarrambat CFA is calling for residents to plan for their family’s safety this summer.

Captain Andrew Napoleone said CFA volunteers often meet people who are hesitant to prepare for fires.

“They are not sure when to prepare for summer, think it’s going to be too complicated, or think they’re so close to Melbourne that bushfires won’t affect them,” Mr Napoleone.

“The reality is that the bushfire season already is well under way.”

Whittlesea’s fire danger period started in late November , and will not end until 1 May.

“While most Victorians won’t see [a bushfire] up close, being prepared can make all the difference if it happens here,” Mr Napoleone said.

Mr Napoleone said there are simple ways to make your property less likely to burn and easier to save, and to ensure every family member knows what to do in an emergency.

“Planning beats panic every time,” he said.

Visit cfa.vic.gov.au and click on ‘Plan & Prepare’ to find a list of things you can do to plan for your family’s safety this summer.

During the fire danger period you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.
