Gladstone Park residents on Bower Court and the neighbouring Woodstock Drive have expressed their concern over the proposed development of three new dwellings.

At the Hume council meeting on Monday, November 28, the council approved a motion to grant a planning permit for the development of three dwellings and removal of a covenant at 4 Bower Court.

Woodstock Drive landlord Karen Dalton said she owned the property immediately next door to the proposed dwellings and was opposed to the development due to the impact it would have on natural light.

“I have lodged two separate objections to the town planner [and] I was extremely disappointed that it doesn’t seem to have been taken into consideration,” she said.

“They haven’t taken into consideration that the brick walls will impede on natural light on the bedroom and the family room.”

Bower Court resident Josephine Camilleri said she had concerns about the impact the new development would have on the narrow entry to the court.

“There is an awful lot that goes on in a court [and] we only have one entrance and one exit,” she said.

Hume councillor Jack Medcraft supported the motion and said the application adhered to the appropriate guidelines.

“There is a guide we have to go by and sometimes it’s not what people want to hear. but if it meets all of the planning requirements, then we have no choice but to follow the government law,” he said.

“If we knock this back, it’ll go to VCAT…[they] will look at it and say it meets all the requirements of the planning law and they’ll approve it.

“It’s not going to please everybody, but we’ve got no choice.”

The motion was carried with six councillors for and four against.
