Refugee Week celebration in Whittlesea

Refugee stories and culture will take centre stage at a local event in South Morang next week, as part of national Refugee Week.

Whittlesea will host a public event on Thursday June 19 at the Civic Centre on 25 Ferres Boulevard.

Running from 10am to 1pm, Finding Freedom: Diversity in Community will feature live multicultural performances, music and a guest speaker, all aimed at raising awareness of the journeys and contributions of people from refugee backgrounds.

Held nationally from June 15 to June 21, this year’s Refugee Week theme “Finding Freedom: Diversity in Community” – a focus that aligns closely with Whittlesea’s population, which includes residents from more than 130 countries.

Mayor Martin Taylor said the week was a chance to reflect on the resilience of refugee communities.

“Refugee Week is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of refugees and acknowledge the extraordinary challenges they overcome in rebuilding their lives,” Cr Taylor said.

“It is through their resilience, courage, and determination that we are reminded of the strength found in diversity.”

The council also runs year-round programs to support new residents, including English classes at local libraries, free swimming lessons, digital literacy workshops and emergency relief.

“Together, we celebrate not just Refugee Week but the shared humanity that binds us all.”

Booking for the event can be made at whittlesea.vic.gov.au/refugeeweek.
