Over the Easter long weekend, 24 speeding offences were recorded in Hume during Victoria Police’s state-wide road safety campaign, Operation Compass.

The initiative was introduced to tackle reckless driving over the April school holidays, incorporating the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends.

A number of dangerous drivers were recorded traveling at high speeds of up to 180km/h, in and around Hume on the evening of Good Friday and into the early morning of Saturday, April 16.

Other road safety offences included 17 disobeying signs/signals, 3 unlicensed drivers, and 2 drink drivers.

Hume Inspector Dean Clinton said the figures were still too high.

“The results of the operation are an indication that some people are still driving too fast and not obeying the road rules and traffic signs in the area. It is these behaviours that put the Hume community at risk,” Inspector Clinton said.

“We know the majority of our residents do the right thing, and we want everyone to get where they’re going and back home safely. We will continue to hold people to account that put theirs and others safety at risk.”

Phase two will commence Friday, April 22 and will conclude Monday, April 25.

“In Hume, we are aware that driver behaviour is a community priority and we are working to tackle the issue, not just during Operation Compass, but ongoing,” he said.

“As we enter this time of the year, it gets darker and the roads are more often wet, and we ask everyone to take their time, slow down and drive safely.”
