A water quality management plan will be developed to address concerns about the conditions at Jack Roper Lake.
Hume councillor Naim Kurt earlier this year raised concerns about the inability of community groups to use the Broadmeadows lake because of pollution concerns.
A letter from water minister Lisa Neville to the council, stated Melbourne Water representatives have started to discuss the next steps in a sanitary and water quality survey of the lake.
The letter stated that Melbourne Water would lead the development of a detailed project plan for a recreational sustainability assessment, while assessing the possible recreation uses of the lake.
Cr Kurt said it was a fantastic outcome for the council.
“We know pollution and water quality has been an ongoing issue along Merlynston Creek and Jack Roper Lake since the SKM fire [in 2017],” he said.
“We’ve had to drag Melbourne Water to the table to address the issue and thankfully with the minister’s support we have been able to secure a project plan to assess water quality and hopefully develop some actions to address pollution as well.
“I know it will be a welcome outcome for many residents who want to use the lake for recreational purposes, including the great people of Sailability North who use the lake to teach vulnerable cohorts how to sail and have been unable to do so for almost two years now.”
