The use of illegal petrol powered push bikes is on the rise in Whittlesea, according to police.
In a post to the Eyewatch- Whittlesea Police Service Area Facebook page, police warned that users of petrol powered push bikes need to be aware of the associate consequences of riding these bikes.
Police said a bike is classified as a motorised bicycle if the motor is the primary source of power and the motor’s output exceeds 200 watt
“If you are found to be riding a motorised push bike that exceeds 200 watts in a public place you must follow road rules applicable to a motorbike,” police said.
“To drive a vehicle on public roads in Victoria, it must be registered, the rider must hold a valid licence and the operator must wear an approved motor bike helmet.”
Motorised bicycle users can face fines of up to $826 and possible demerit points.
“If you are involved in a collision with members of the public you may have to face court proceedings,” police warned.
