Peak hour delays mar Craigieburn line trains

Peak hour punctuality on the Craigieburn line has fallen, with more than 10 per cent of trains running late in January.

Latest performance data from Public Transport Victoria reveals that just 88.4 per cent of the lines peak services were on time last month, down from 91 per cent in January 2016.

Across the network, 91.8 per cent of peak services ran on time.

Overall punctuality on the northern line also fell, with only 90.9 per cent of trains coming in on time. In January last year, 91.8 per cent of services ran to the timetable.

Metro spokesman Marcus Williams said the Craigieburn line has been impacted by vandalism, trespassers, police incidents and sick passengers throughout January.

“The biggest impact on punctuality was early on January 20, when Melbourne experienced flooding and the heaviest rainfall in six months,” he said.

The nearby South Morang line fared better, and is Melbourne’s second most punctual route behind the Glen Waverley line. Mr Williams said South Morang commuters had also faced a few delays during January.

He said Metro would work with PTV and the state government to ensure more punctual services.

“Longer term government investment in the Melbourne Metro Tunnel will open up capacity in the City Loop to improve Craigieburn services, and the Mernda rail extension and Hurstbridge rail line upgrade will both provide benefits to passengers on the South Morang line,” Mr Williams said.
