Police made five arrests and confiscated several dangerous weapons in Broadmeadows during a crackdown on weapons-related offences.

Broadmeadows police, working in conjunction with Transit police, PSOs, and the Sheriff’s Office, concentrated their efforts on Broadmeadows train station and shopping centre on Tuesday September 26.

Officers conducted more than 150 wand-searches, uncovering a pocket knife, two flick knives, and illicit drugs. Four individuals received infringement notices for concealing weapons.

Five more arrests were made, including two individuals apprehended on outstanding warrants.

Two arrests were related to shop theft and one person was taken into custody for being wanted on whereabouts.

The Omni Operation, which allows police to unearth weapon offences within a defined search area, operates under Section 10D of the Control of Weapons Act.

Police said the operation sent a message that the community will not tolerate dangerous weapons, and law enforcement agencies will proactively seize them to prevent potential harm.

Hume Local Area Commander Acting Inspector Raj Tillekeratne said the operation’s primary aim was to enhance safety in and around Broadmeadows shopping centre and public transport hubs.

“Our top priority is keeping the Hume community safe, so we’ll continue to run targeted operations to detect and deter offending,” he said.

“This is about reminding those people that we won’t tolerate weapons and will seize them before they cause harm.”
