Feeling safe is Awni Alghareeb’s favourite thing about living in Australia.

The Mill Park pensioner has called Australia home for almost three years, after fleeing Iraq with his wife, Sammira almost a decade ago.

With the help of Whittlesea Community Connections (WCC), the Alghareebs have settled into their new life in Australia.

“First of all I like the freedom here,” Mr Alghareeb said. “It has a nice climate and great Australian people who will help anyone who asks a question.”

The Alghareebs are among the many refugees from across Whittlesea who reach out to WCC each week.

To help celebrate the municipality’s diverse community, WCC has organised a World Refugee Week event on Wednesday, June 22, at Epping Memorial Hall, 827 High Street, Epping, from 3.30-7pm. Details: 9401 6666
