Construction is ramping up on Epping’s Northern Hospital as major milestones have been reached across both stages of the project.
Health Infrastructure Minister Melissa Horne announced construction firm John Holland has been appointed as managing contractor for stage two of the redevelopment after stage one’s new ambulatory care entre recently hit structural completion.
Greenvale MP Iwan Walters said the project is not far off completion.
“The progress on this project is powering ahead and I know the community are looking forward to knowing they’ll be able to rely on this bigger, better Northern Hospital in the not-too-distant future,” he said.
Stage two of the build will include the delivery of a new emergency department and inpatient unit tower on Cooper Street.
The new centre is set to open in mid-2026 and will provide a dedicated space for outpatient and ambulatory services, clinical care, and hospital administration, linking to the existing facility via a ground-level connection.
Once completed, the expanded hospital will boast a larger emergency department with a dedicated paediatric zone, a specialised mental health and alcohol and other drugs hub, an emergency observation unit, and additional inpatient beds and parking spaces.
Ms Horne said the redevelopment would significantly boost healthcare access for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs.
“This is another exciting step forward in our massive investment to upgrade the busy Northern Hospital – delivering more care, closer to home,” she said.
The redevelopment will expand the hospital’s capacity to include nearly 200 treatment spaces and accommodate 30,000 more emergency patients each year.
Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny said the expansion will allow access to more families in the north.
“This redevelopment will mean local families can get the care they need faster, without having to travel far from home,” she said.
Mill Park MP Lily D’Ambrosio labelled the expanded hospital a “gamechanger for locals in the north”, while Broadmeadows MP Kathleen Matthews-Ward said the project will “make it easier to get care” for Broadmeadows locals.
The full development is said to support 2200 local jobs during its construction stage and is expected to be completed by late 2029.
