They’re the steady hands in crisis, the comforting presence at bedside, and the champions of care– this May, Northern celebrated the amazing contributions of its more than 4,000 nurses and midwives with stories, cupcakes, and heartfelt gratitude.
To mark International Day of the Midwife, May 5 and International Nurses Day, May 12, the health service turned the spotlight on its dedicated staff, sharing inspiring stories across its sites and surprising teams on the wards with sweet treats.
Jennifer Gilham, Acting Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer at Northern Health, praised the compassion and commitment shown by nursing and midwifery staff every day.
“This year’s theme, Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses together strengthens economies, highlights the importance of supporting the health and well-being of our nurses who are vital to the functioning of health systems globally,” Ms Gilham said.
“Nurses face numerous challenges– physical, mental, emotional, and ethical– and it is imperative that we address these challenges in a way to promote their overall health.”
In a further show of appreciation, Northern Health Foundation has again teamed up with BankVic to offer a $5,000 scholarship to one exceptional nurse or midwife.
The funding can support further study, a national conference, or professional development, with the winner to be announced on May 30.
Chief Executive Debra Bourne, who began her career as a nurse and midwife, reflected on her journey and the importance of honouring those in the profession.
“This was a wonderful and rewarding time in my professional life,” Ms Bourne said.
“At this time of the year, when we recognise our midwives and nurses, I am grateful for all the work they do in providing care for our women, their families and newborns.”
