Emergency department nurses took centre stage at Northern Health earlier this week for National Emergency Nurses Day.

The Northern Hospital paid tribute to its emergency nurses on Wednesday, thanking them for their dedication to helping patients.

The emergency department also launched its new motto- we are a family caring for our community- as part of the celebrations.

The department-wide initiative reflects the team approach nurses adopt to provide the best care in a high pressure environment.

Emergency department nurse unit manager Janice Fernandes said it was important to celebrate nurses.

“We are the busiest [emergency department] in the state and to be able to meet the demands of our patients, families and the community in a timely manner can be challenging,” she said.

“We are here to serve our patients and their families, and be able to make a difference to our community.”

Presentations to The Northern Hospital’s emergency department rose 7.9 per cent in 2017-18, to 99,400 presentations.

The hospital also had 28,800 ambulance arrivals.
