The master plan for Nick Ascenzo Reserve in Thomastown received resounding endorsement from Whittlesea council, setting the stage for a transformative evolution of the key open space.
The plan outlines short, medium, and long-term strategies geared towards developing the park’s natural allure, heightening safety measures, and establishing an inclusive and distinctive recreational space that caters to all types of people within the community.
The park will be the biggest non-organised sport reserve in Whittlesea.
Chair administrator Lydia Wilson expressed gratitude for the valuable insights gathered during the extensive community consultation phase.
“Thank you to everyone who contributed their feedback. The insights our community has shared with us – including from residents, a nearby school, community activity centre users, and local traders – have helped us develop this master plan,” she said.
Key priorities identified through community input, including safety, accessibility, inclusive play, and socialising opportunities, have been duly incorporated into the master plan. The proposed changes encompass adjustments to lighting, landscaping, path connections, and play spaces.
“These changes will provide a versatile recreational space that caters to our diverse community, including a playground with nature-based play elements, and a scooter, skate, and BMX loop, all of which provide a range of options for children of all ages to get active and get involved in creative play.”
Encouraging physical activity, the plan promotes a healthier lifestyle within the community.
The flexible central lawn, expanded picnic area, outdoor gathering spaces, and plaza space are poised to serve as venues for community events, picnics, and social gatherings.
To bolster the park’s ecological diversity and sustainability, the master plan incorporates the planting of additional trees for increased shade and low-maintenance garden beds.
