Craigieburn man charged after detonating explosives in park

The bomb squad last week descended on the Craigieburn house of a man allegedly involved in setting off an explosive device in a public park.

Newbry Street was cordoned off from noon until 7pm last Thursday as police executed a search warrant.

Lazorous Michailidis, 31, appeared at an out-of-sessions hearing at Broadmeadows police station that night, charged with weapons and drug offences.

The search warrant followed an incident in the early hours of November 24.

Police allege Michailidis detonated an explosive device in a barbecue at a public park near his house.

The explosion sent debris flying up to 30 metres.

Police say no one was in the park at the time, but if the explosion had occurred 20 minutes earlier, two people could have been harmed by it.

Among the items discovered by police at the Craigieburn house were what they allege to be four kilograms of chemicals and wires hanging out of a metal canister.

They also recovered 50 grams of cannabis, three ecstasy pills, equipment used to manufacture drugs, a pistol, some flares and seven drivers’ licences.

Michailidis did not apply for bail.

He was remanded in custody and faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday where the matter was adjourned to March 10 next year for a committal mention. The accused has been remanded in custody until that date.
