New top baby names announced

Two new baby names have been chosen as favourites by Victorian parents.

Charlotte took the top spot for girls, while Noah broke the 11-year winning streak held by Oliver for boys.

The top 20 baby names of 2025 were announced by the Government Services Minister Danny Pearson.

“Congratulations to our littlest Victorians who made the most popular name list for 2025, particularly the new Noahs and Charlottes,” Mr Pearson said.

This is the first year Noah has been the most popular baby boy name, Oliver came in second followed by Henry, Leo and Theodore.

Charlotte returned to the top spot for the first time since 2022, ahead of Amelia, Hazel, Mia and 2024-leader, Isla.

“Deciding on a baby’s name is an important and memorable step for parents, and not one that is always straightforward,” Mr Pearson said.

More than 80,000 births were registered in Victoria in 2025, including over 350 Charlottes and more than 500 Noahs.

Both names have been consistently popular, with Charlotte placing within the top three names since 2012, and Noah within the top five for ten years.

Other new top 20 names include Lucy, Violet and Zoe for girls, while Isaac and Max jumped significantly in popularity for boys.

The highest new entries in the top 100 are Lainey at 69 for girls, and Rory at 77 for boys.

Parents are encouraged to register their baby’s name within the first 60 days after birth, and can register online on the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages platform.
