Donnybrook’s skaters will soon have a dedicated space to skate, with construction underway on the suburb’s first skate park at the Olivine Recreation Reserve.
The 800 square metre park is part of Mirvac’s growing 465-hectare Olivine masterplanned community which is home to about 2500 residents and ultimately planned for over 4500 lots.
The new facility is being delivered by Mirvac in partnership with Whittlesea council and is set to be completed by October.
The state government recently provided a $300,000 grant for the park through its Growing Suburbs Fund.
The beginner-to-intermediate-level skate park is set to become a major drawcard for Olivine’s growing population, which is already home to around 2500 residents.
Located close to Hume Anglican Grammar and Donnybrook Primary School, it will sit alongside existing recreation reserve facilities including sports ovals, a dog park, playground and pavilion.
Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara, Gunai, and Wurundjeri Melbourne-based artist Coree Thorpe has been commissioned to create artwork for the park, weaving local stories and identity into the space.
“The focus is to be fun and celebrate the totems of the Wurundjeri with Bunjil (eagle) and Waa (crow),” he said.
Mirvac’s Glen Greening said the project would deliver a safe, inclusive and much-needed outlet for local teenagers.
“The skate park at Olivine will be the first in the City of Whittlesea, creating a safe, vibrant, and inclusive space for teenagers to connect, be active and feel a sense of belonging,” he said.
