A community hub in Wollert has been officially named, just in time for its opening later this year.
Local residents came together with Whittlesea council to select the name, Kirrip Community Centre.
Kirrip means ‘friend’ in the local Woi Wurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, celebrating the area’s rich Indigenous history and culture.
The centre includes a modern kindergarten, two fully equipped maternal and child health consulting suites, a community hall and meeting spaces which are available to hire.
City of Whittlesea chair administrator Lydia Wilson said the name was chosen to reflect the opportunities the centre provides for forming friendships.
“Kirrip Community Centre will be a place for people to come together, socialise and share their ideas and experiences,” Ms Wilson said.
The centre, located on De Rossi Boulevard, is a partnership between the City of Whittlesea and the Victorian School Building Authority.
Maternal and Child Health services will operate from the centre from December 2021.
Kindergarten programs will start in January 2022, with applications for three and four-year-old kindergarten for 2022 now open. To apply visit whittlesea.vic.gov.au/kinder
