New MICA paramedics to strengthen emergency care

“Our MICA paramedics are some of the world’s best,” said Minister for Ambulance Services Mary-Anne Thomas, as she welcomed the latest cohort of 24 Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) intern paramedics.

The group of experienced Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics will soon be stationed across Victoria, providing specialised, lifesaving care to patients in need.

“We will always back and invest in our paramedics, so they can keep delivering world-class emergency care to all Victorians when they need it,” the Minister added.

Over the next six weeks, the new MICA interns will undergo extensive training, covering clinical responses to respiratory, cardiac, paediatric and obstetric emergencies, as well as sessions on welfare, wellbeing, pharmacy and leadership.

After this, they will begin 18 months of on-road training alongside experienced MICA paramedics, before being stationed in locations including Bundoora, Ravenhall, Tarneit, Ringwood, Hampton Park, Rosebud, Campbellfield, Morwell, Warrnambool, Ballarat and Wodonga.

Working in pairs or solo, the new MICA paramedics will be able to manage complex cases with advanced procedures, providing lifesaving care faster to patients.

According to the government, the latest intake brings the total number of MICA interns at various stages of their program to 96, greatly expanding the specialied emergency care available to Victorians.
