New look for Alexander Avenue shopping precinct

A major streetscape upgrade has revitalised the Alexander Avenue shopping precinct in Thomastown, creating a safer, greener and more inviting space for locals and visitors.

Whittlesea council said the improvements make the area a more enjoyable place to shop, walk and connect with others, while supporting local businesses.

Key features of the upgrade include a new shop front footpath, raised pedestrian crossing, seating and picnic settings, garden beds, new lighting and improved pedestrian and cycling paths.

Landscaping works were also carried out at nearby Nick Ascenzo Reserve, with accessible parking added to improve ease of access for all users.

The Alexander Avenue streetscape improvement project was funded by Whittlesea council with support of a $200,000 grant from the state government.

Local families and traders helped celebrate the transformation at a community event on July 19, with entertainment from the Florinians Greek Dance Group, face painting and giveaways.

Stage two of the upgrade will focus on improving safety at the intersection of Boronia and Cedar streets.

This next phase will include a raised pedestrian crossing, new drainage infrastructure, upgraded lighting, kerbs and channels and improved footpath connections.

Whittlesea mayor Martin Taylor said projects like this make a real difference to how people experience their local shopping strips.

“We want to see people choosing to shop locally, and improvements such as those made at Alexander Avenue encourage that by making it easier and more appealing to spend time here,” he said.

“Small businesses are the heart of our neighbourhoods, and we’re committed to supporting them by investing in the places where they operate.”
