Wholesale flower traders at the National Flower Centre will sell more than a million roses and other flowers next week in the lead up to Valentine’s Day.
Next Tuesday 13 February will be the busiest day of the year for more than 60 growers and wholesalers who supply more than 700 florists around Victoria from the National Flower Centre at Melbourne Market in Epping.
Victorians are set to spend big on their loved ones, with flowers remaining the number one choice of gift for those looking to spoil their Valentine.
National Flower Centre traders say roses are still the most sought-after flower for Valentine’s Day but other varieties popular this year include lisianthus and carnations – which are increasingly popular with a younger generation – with deeply coloured hydrangea, vibrant dahlias and Queen Anne’s lace also in demand.
Other big flower trends this year include preserved roses – roses that are picked in their prime and specially treated to last years – tinted roses, which have bright, dye-coloured petals, and Rose Bears.
Melbourne Market CEO Mark Maskiell says flowers are the original and ultimate Public Display of Affection.
“Everyone loves receiving flowers at any time of the year but there’s something special about flowers on Valentine’s Day. Nothing says love quite like a big, beautiful bunch of blooms and traders at the National Flower Centre are working around the clock to ensure 14 February is filled with couples across the state showing Public Displays of Affection with flowers!”

Keep flowers out of direct sunlight
Cut stems on an angle – this creates a wider base for more water and nutrient uptake

Regularly change water – once every two days is ideal
Re-cut stems (on an angle) every 4-5 days
