This week from Sunday March 19 to Sunday the 26th is Multiple Birth Awareness Week (MBAW).
MBAW is a national campaign to raise awareness around, and draw attention to, the unique realities for multiple birth families in Australia.
Local Hume residents Aida Abou Dawood and her husband, Nahiz, welcomed two boys and a girl via caesarean on Monday January 9 at the Royal Women’s Hospital.
They were then transferred to Northern Health’s Special Care Nursery (SCN) so they could be easily visited by their parents who live in Coolaroo.
“I was scared, but excited, when I found out I was having triplets, they truly are a miracle,” said Mrs Dawood.
“It’s very challenging having three little babies all at once because they’re never all asleep at the same time, but they’re all happy and healthy, and so am I, so I’m grateful for that.”
The babies were in SCN for three weeks, with twice a day visits from the parents, before heading home on neonatal Hospital In The Home (HITH).
Northern Health Acting Maternity Unit Manager, Seda Kiroglu said that the neonatal HITH allows parents to take their babies home and continue to be monitored by the hospital.
“The most important thing is that we can keep mums with their babies and keep all the babies
together with their families.”
