Moves to bring road under council control

Hume has taken the first step toward declaring a section of road abutting 810 and 860 Summerhill Road in Craigieburn a public highway.

Councillors began the statutory process to formalise the planned road as part of the public road network at the Monday 13 October council meeting.

The move comes as part of efforts to facilitate further development of the Craigieburn North Employment Area Precinct Structure Plan, which includes the Kinetic Business Park.

The land is not currently listed on the council’s register of public roads and is expected to provide key access for future subdivisions in the growing employment precinct.

Under the proposal, the land will vest in council ownership and be managed under the Road Management Act 2004 if it is ultimately declared a public highway.

Once complete, the new road would be added to Hume’s public road register, giving the council responsibility for its inspection, repair, and maintenance.

Cr Jim Overend said the move would benefit the community.

“It’s in an area that we don’t use and it’s being developed now, and it’s great for our community,” he said.

Council also resolved to advertise the proposal in the local media as well as its website to allow for public consultation, giving residents and potentially affected parties 28 days to make written submissions on the matter.
