Donnybrook Road would be duplicated and its level crossing removed under a Coalition federal government.
Federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton announced $192 million to duplicate Donnybrook Road to Epping Road, remove the level crossing, upgrade the Donnybrook Road connection to the Hume Freeway, install a new signalised intersection at Mitchell Street and the southbound Hume Freeway exit and duplicate of the bridge over the freeway.
The money for the project would be redirected from the upgrade of Sunshine station.
Labor has already committed $125 million to replace the roundabout at the Mitchell Street intersection with lights and to add extra lanes at the intersection to improve traffic flow onto the freeway.
As reported by Star Weekly, Hume council welcomed Labor’s commitment but some councillors labelled it a “Band-Aid” solution and questioned whether it would improve the congestion facing locals daily.
Following Mr Dutton’s announcement, council said it has long advocated for the duplication of Donnybrook Road.
“I’m proud the needs of our rapidly growing communities in Hume’s north are getting recognition the recognition they deserve,” mayor Jarrod Bell said.
“Council has long been calling on all levels of government to support the upgrade of Donnybrook Road. Our residents deserve eased traffic conditions, improved safety, enhanced access to jobs and services, and future-proofing for this critical transport link.”
