Mickleham community hub on the cards

A community hub will open in Mickleham within three years.

The state government will contribute $1.5 million towards the Merrifield West Northern Community Hub, which will be built by Hume council.

The hub will have three preschool rooms with capacity for 198 preschool positions, five maternal and child health service consulting rooms and a dedicated waiting area, and multipurpose activity rooms for community activities such as playgroup.

The centre will also provide flexible arts and cultural spaces where a range of activities and events can take place to contribute towards creating a strong and inclusive community.

Cr Geoff Porter said the council would contribute $11.4 million to the hub.

“In 2018, the population of Mickleham is 7244 and by 2035, this will grow to more than 48,000 residents,” he said.

“Growing communities like Mickleham need quality facilities to meet the demands of a changing community and to provide opportunities to bring residents together.”

Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the new hub would help more families reap the benefits of early childhood education.

“As our community is a destination of choice for young families, community infrastructure like this is so important,” she said.
