Mernda train disruptions start this weekend

Mernda train passengers face rolling disruptions to services in the next two weeks as work begins on a rail network upgrade.

The work will take place from Friday, March 15, and will allow sections of the Mernda line to be upgraded ahead of a major construction blitz on the train network in April.

The April construction blitz will allow work to be carried out on the Metro Tunnel and level crossing removal projects.

Buses will replace trains between Parliament and Bell stations from 8.10pm on Friday to the last train on Sunday.

Buses will also replace trains from 8.10pm to the last train each night from March 18 to 20.

Services will again be disrupted from March 23, with buses replacing trains between Thornbury and Epping from 12.30am on March 23 to the last train on March 24, and from 8.30pm to the last train each night between March 25 and 28.

Public Transport Victoria chief executive Jeroen Weimar urged passengers to plan ahead.

“These essential works will pave the way for the larger April upgrades,” he said. “We’re making sure everyone can enjoy the best that Melbourne has to offer while we get on with the transport projects our network needs.”

Buses will replace trains between Thornbury and Epping from 8.30pm on April 3 to the last train on April 9.
