Four new firefighters have joined the Mernda CFA this week after successfully completing their general fire fighter course.

Celine Sanders, Nicole Farr, David Gent, and Connor Jackson have all been welcomed to the unit and will begin attending to calls.

Mernda thirs lieutenant Jordan Casey said he is excited to welcome the newest CFA recruits to the unit.

“It’s really energising for the brigade to see more new people joining, particularly after the COVID pandemic,” he said.

“We’ve had a really strong interest to join the brigade which is really good to see.”

Mr Casey said the new recruits come from diverse backgrounds reflecting the Mernda community.

“We have two females and two males varying in ages from 19 – 38,” he said.

“We’re from the community and are here for the community.”

Mr Casey said volunteers join the CFA for numerous different reasons.

“Volunteering gives our members a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction… it gives us life skills that not many paid employment would give us.

“For a lot of our members it’s about giving back to the community – they understand when someone calls triple-0 it’s someone like them that responds.”
